Team-based Final Year Projects:

Note: Team-based final year projects were introduced in Canada by Carleton University in 1992. The point of this is to divide students into groups of 20-30, which are led by 3-6 professors and industry experts. Our Department has 10 such team-based final year projects, from which students can select. Each team mimics or simulates the operations of an engineering firm, from conceptual design to manufacturing and testing of a prototype. The task of each team is to design and build a concrete product with real timelines and real budget. This method – thanks to its success – has since been copied by a number of other universities in Canada. I have been participating in the following projects in the past 12 years:

UAV Helicopter (i.e. drone helicopter):              Project Manager (2012 – present)
                                                                                              http://ruas.mae.carleton.ca

UAV Aircraft (i.e. drone aircraft):                         Leader of Aerodynamics Group (2010)

Formula SAE race car:                                                Leader of Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer and  composite chassis group (2008, 2011)
                                                                                              http://cufsae.wix.com/cufsae

Satellite:                                                                            Leader of Launch Vehicle (i.e. rocket design) group (2004-2007)

Zero emission gas turbine:                                        Leader of Aerodynamics Group (2003)

TRAINING OF GRADUATE STUDENTS

Canada: I have supervised or co-supervised 28 graduate research students in the past 12 years, among them 5 PhD students (5-years training with 4 years of thesis work) and 23 Master’s students (2-year training with 16 months of thesis work). In Canada, the tuition fee and research salary is paid not by the state but from the professor’s research grants. In my case, I have landed a total of 3 million CAD worth of research grants (please see App. B for full details)

Hungary: In the past 1 year, I have co-supervised the MSc Thesis of 4 Hungarian students at the Audi Department of Whole Vehicle Engineering at Széchenyi University in Győr, Hungary.

Many of my students have won prestigious awards, such as Konstyantyn Khomutov the $100,000 worth Martin Walmsley Fellowship from the Ontario Center of Excellence (OCE) and Daniel Gosselin, who has won the American Helicopter Society’s Ottawa/Montreal Chapter’s Lichten competition as the best new research paper.
